Heleen van Aswegen

Heleen van Aswegen worked as a physiotherapist in several acute care settings (including trauma settings) in South Africa and the United Kingdom for more than twenty years. She is now a full-professor in the Department of Physiotherapy in the Faculty of Health Sciences of the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, South Africa. Her research interest is physiotherapy specifically in the fields of critical care and trauma. Heleen is the editor of the book ‘Cardiopulmonary Physiotherapy in Trauma: An Evidence-based Approach’ published by World Scientific. https://doi.org/10.1142/13509

Brenda Morrow

Brenda Morrow is a Physiotherapist and Full Professor in the Department of Paediatrics & Child Health, University of Cape Town, South Africa. Brenda has special interests in interdisciplinary paediatric critical care practice and research; global health; cardiopulmonary rehabilitation; palliative care; and medical ethics. Brenda has over 150 peer reviewed publications; she is co-editor of the textbook, “Cardiopulmonary Physiotherapy in Trauma: An Evidence-based Approach” and presented at numerous national and international congresses. She is immediate past-President of the World Federation of Pediatric Intensive and Critical Care Societies and current President of the Critical Care Society of Southern Africa. Brenda is Editor-in-Chief of the Southern African Journal of Critical Care; Senior Associate Editor for Pediatric Critical Care Medicine and Associate Academic Editor of PlosOne.

Chantal Mostert

Chantal is a registered dietitian and has worked at Netcare Milpark Hospital in Johannesburg since 2007. At present, she is engaged in private practice, with a particular focus on critical care, transplantation, oncology, and hepatobiliary surgery. Chantal has presented talks on nutrition in critical care and in patients with burns and polytrauma at a variety of congresses and workshops throughout South Africa over the past 13 years and served on the advisory boards of Nutricia (International) and  Pharmaco Medtrition. She is a member of the professional societies of Association of Dietetics of South Africa (ADSA), South African Society of Parenteral Enteral Nutrition (SASPEN), and European Society for Clinical Nutrition and Metabolism (ESPEN).

Kim Coutts

Dr Kim Coutts is a senior lecturer at the University of the Witwatersrand Speech Pathology & Audiology Department. She is a National Research Foundation Y2 rated researcher. She developed her interest in critical care when she ran the Speech Therapy department at Helen Joseph Hospital in Johannesburg from 2008-2018, where she worked daily in ICU. She now has her research teaching interests in tracheostomy, ICU, head and neck cancer, adult dysphagia, third party disability and simulation in teaching.

Kirsty van Stormbroek

Kirsty started her career as an occupational therapist in a rural region of South Africa, followed by joining the Martin Singer Hand Unit at Groote Schuur Hospital, Cape Town. Through these nine years of clinical experience she came to appreciate the unique contribution that occupational therapy makes to the lives of individuals and communities. Her Masters research by dissertation sought to determine the extent to which novice therapists in South Africa are equipped to treat clients with
hand injuries and conditions. On completion, she joined the University of the Witwatersrand Occupational Therapy Department as Lecturer in 2015. She completed her PhD in 2024 in which she developed evidence-based guidelines for the support and development of generalist occupational therapists delivering hand-injury care in SA. Kirsty's other areas of interest include physical rehabilitation, occupation-centred practice, and health service development in rural and remote areas.

Moira Wilson

Moira is an experienced clinician physiotherapist who has worked in critical care and acute trauma settings for more than 40 years. Her physiotherapy practice has been the lead practice caring for patients with traumatic injury admitted to Netcare Milpark hospital Trauma ICU for many years. Moira successfully completed the Emergency Management of Severe Burns course as well as an MSc in Burns Care (Queen Mary University, London). She actively contributes to teaching of staff at Milpark hospital and students of the Physiotherapy department of the University of the Witwatersrand. She co-authored a paper published in the South African Journal of Physiotherapy, and a chapter in the book Cardiopulmonary Physiotherapy in Trauma: An Evidence-Based Approach. Moira has received several business awards and is the current chair of iZandla Consulting Physiotherapists.

Natascha Plani

Natascha is an experienced clinician physiotherapist who has worked in critical care and acute trauma settings since 1995. She graduated with MSc Physiotherapy at the University of Witwatersrand (2010). She is a member of the Trauma Society of South Africa, Critical Care Society of South Africa, and South African Society of Physiotherapy. She represented South Africa on the World Confederation of Physical Therapists (WCPT) Africa region, and served as executive member and treasurer of the International Confederation of Cardiorespiratory Physical Therapists (ICCrPT). She presented at several local and international congresses/symposiums, authored papers, and a chapter in the book Cardiopulmonary Physiotherapy in Trauma: An Evidence-Based Approach.

Her research interests are early mobilization in ICU, proning, trauma follow-up, minimum clinical standards for physiotherapy in ICU, and muscle wasting mechanisms in critical illness.

Romy Parker

Romy Parker is a Professor at the University of Cape Town, South Africa and the Director of the Pain Management Clinic at UCT. Her work in the pain field is an extension of her personal goal – that every person in South Africa has access to a healthcare professional who understands pain. Romy's work in pain includes laboratory, clinical, education, and implementation research. She leads a team of clinician researchers working in both perioperative pain and chronic pain management. Their aim is to develop, test and implement effective, culturally appropriate and sustainable treatments. Her personal focus is on chronic pain in people living with HIV, exploring epidemiology, pain mechanisms and non-pharmacological interventions using education and exercise for implementation at the primary healthcare level.

Ronel Roos

Ronel Roos is a Physiotherapist and Associate Professor in the Physiotherapy department at the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, South Africa. She teaches and does research in cardiopulmonary and intensive care physiotherapy. Her research interest is health promotion and rehabilitation of individuals with cardiopulmonary dysfunction to highlight quality of life and disability. The National Research Foundation of South Africa recognised her contributions as an established researcher, and awarded her a C2 rating (2023). Ronel is dedicated to advancing the community of practice related to cardiopulmonary and intensive care physiotherapy in South Africa. She received the Faculty of Health Sciences Phillip V Tobias Distinguished Teacher’s Award for Clinical Sciences, and Honorary Life Membership of the Cardiopulmonary Physiotherapy Rehabilitation Group of the South African Society of Physiotherapy for her contributions to advancing evidence-based clinical practice.

Santel de Lange

Santel holds a PhD in Nursing Science, a Masters degree in Nursing: Clinical fields of study and specialty qualifications in: Trauma and Emergency Nursing and Nursing Education. Her research focuses on the advancement of nursing practice in acute care settings. She has a special interest in Emergency Nursing, interprofessional communication and collaboration and evidence-based practice. 

She is a committee member of the Emergency Nurses Association of South Africa, a member of the African Federation of Emergency Medicine (AFEM) and the AFEM Nurses Forum. She is also a member of Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Nursing Society (STTI) Alpha Beta Beta Chapter. She collaborates with national and international organizations for the improvement of emergency care.

Timothy Hardcastle

Professor Timothy Hardcastle is a registered Trauma Critical Care Surgeon and is Director/Chief Specialist of Trauma & Burns at Inkosi Albert Luthuli Central Hospital in Durban, Kwazulu-Natal, and Honorary Associate Professor of Surgery as head of the Trauma Fellowship Training Program at University of KwaZulu-Natal. He is also Provincial Head of Trauma and Burns for KwaZulu-Natal’s Department of Health. He holds an Associate Research Professorship in Health Sciences at Durban University of Technology. He is well published and cited in the field of trauma prehospital care, and critical care, with an H-index of 34. His clinical interests include snakebite wound care, vascular trauma, intensive care for trauma (including blunt chest trauma), and Trauma Systems with a focus on low-and middle-income countries (LMIC’s). He is an Associate Editor of five major international journals and reviews for a number of other journals.
